  • Purpose

    The module is aimed at students with a large interest in editorial magazine design. Students are introduced to the creative process and methods of experimental and new way of working with editorial design. During the 6 weeks the student will learn about the many aspects within creative magazine genres such as Indy magazine, bookazine, Zines and recent new editorial concept. The design teams will work together with the content teams from the elective module Editorial writing and photography.

    The student will learn to identify the reader through research analysis in order to understand behaviour and needs to develop a relevant editorial concept. The student must be able to select the right aesthetics in the development of the final product based on the elements of the concept.

    Students will get a thorough understanding of the graphic and visual elements of layout and design through creative workshops with hands-on assignments within typography, colour theory, illustrations, material and art directing in general. The student will work with the whole concept of editorial design from idea to execution.

    Knowledge

    The student will gain knowledge about:

    -theory and method and an ability to reflect on, identify and understand user behaviour, touch points and their interaction

    -aesthetic and design-related tools and techniques in the development process

    -relevant theory and method and an ability to reflect on the development of innovative and identity-creating design solutions.

    Skills

    The student will get the skills to:

    -apply creative methods and tools for the development of innovative concepts and products

    -assess and apply relevant qualitative methods for the identification of relevant user insights

    -apply an empathic and analytical approach to the concept development process

    -uncover user behaviour through analysis for the purpose of understanding needs and developing communication

    -detect, compare and manage trends and phenomena in relation to trends and social theory in a historical and user-orientated context.

    Competences

    The student will learn to:

    -independently enter into disciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation on brands and concepts

    -design different communication products that take into account the concept's message and set of values

    -independently and professionally present and argue for options and opt-outs in the development process as well as the final design solution.

  • Type of instruction and practical application of learning objectives
    This module is a practice-based course combining lectures and research alongside practical workshops to encourage you to experiment with content, format and page layouts, thus guiding you through the process of designing your own magazine concept step by step.

    The student will be responsible for all visual content. Meaning that all visual content must be made by the student self, anything from illustrations and graphics.

    During this module, students will collaborate with the elective 'Editorial - Writing and Photography'.
  • Subject/module requirement for participation

    Academic requirement for participation
    Only students from Brand Design (INT), Brand Design (DK), Communication Design and media (INT) and Communication Design and media (DK) can participate in this elective.

    Equipment needed to participate

    Students must have advanced skills in the Adobe Package and since this module is very hands-on please make sure to bring materials such as pens, pencils, paint, paper, glue, camera etc.

    The oral test is based on a specific assignment within the elective subject area, where the student must demonstrate an understanding of practice and centrally applied theory and method in relation to the elective subject.

    Duration
    The duration of the oral examination is a total of 30 minutes, of which 10 minutes are allocated to the examinee's presentation, 10 minutes for professional dialogue and 10 minutes for voting and grading.

    Own notes may be brought if a copy is handed out to the examiner and external examiner at the oral examination.

    The test is assessed on the basis of the specific learning objectives that appear from the module description for the elective.
