Design of Complex IT-systems, Domains, Processes and Decisions
2024/2025- Purpose and learning objectives
Students learn how to work with the design of complex IT systems, domains, processes and decisions based on selected theories of IT architecture, distributed systems, service management, systems development, decision theory and data science as well as a number of new technologies, including microservice, domain driven design and machine learning.
KnowledgeThe student has development-based knowledge of and can reflect on applied theories, methods and tools regarding:
Skills
- Service Management and Servitization
- Selection and application of modern technology and tools for the design and construction of digital solutions
- Data-driven decision theory, including selected decision problems from mathematics, computer science, operations analysis and / or cybernetics and their application in business issues
- Incremental development of digital solutions, including DevOps to ensure successful transition to operation
- Issues and methods regarding the establishment of security in IT systems, including SSL, VPN, encryption, certificates and virus scanning. The student masters skills regarding the application of theory and methods for
Competences
- Design of a strategic service vision including a service concept and to define the need for service delivery systems and digital capability
- Design and development of business processes, based on a rational data-driven business approach
- Design of complex, loosely coupled digital solutions with a focus on gathering knowledge about and modeling business domains, including design and use of machine learning solutions and associated data management
- Decision-making in connection with project management. The student can deal with complex and development-oriented issues regarding
- Use of data in business processes including for decisions, decision support and decision systems.
The student can independently participate in the work with
- IT business analysis, including analyzing and designing an IT system in accordance with the business's domain needs
- Design of IT systems to support business and decision-making processes
- Development and further development of complex, distributed and virtual IT systems in an interdisciplinary collaboration and ensure efficient commissioning.
The student can identify own learning needs and development of own knowledge, own skills and competencies in relation to
- Design of complex IT systems, domains, processes and decisions. - Type of instruction
Lectures and assignments, combined with 5 major practical interdisciplinary case assignments, where the subject content is used intensively.
- Subject/module requirement for
participation
Equipment needed to participate
We assume students to have a laptop that runs Windows 10 (or later) or Mac OS X 10.12 (or later).
Older versions of Windows or Mac OS and Linux might work in most cases – but is not supported with help to install open source tools or handle teaching examples.
We assume students have a HDMI-port or miniDVI/lightning port on their laptop.
In a select few teaching situations (not in 1st semester) examples are used, that does not work well with less than 4 GB RAM Memory – for this 8 GB RAM is recommended.
Students will need office software (Microsoft, Apple, Google, or..).
Students need to be able to produce and read pdf-documents, Word-documents, Powerpoint-presentations and Excel-spreadsheets.
There exist a Microsoft cloud version that becomes available when you set up a free one-drive account.
An Internet browser needs to be available (i.e. Chrome or Safari).
We strongly recommend students to have access to Facebook and a private Facebook-account. - Exam
The learning outcomes of the exam are identical with the learning outcomes of the subject(s)/modul(es)
Prerequisites for access to the examinationTo take the exam, the student must submit all the assignments specified on KEA's learning platform.Exam in one or more subjectsSubject/module is tested with the following modulesThe exam is a portfolie exam.
There is one external, individual portfolio exam in the fourth semester.
The exam consists of 2 parts:
a) A portfolio of products
b) An individual oral exam
Portfolio of products:
The basis for the examination consists of selected assignments, which together constitute the portfolio of assignments. The assignments have been selected and described together with any assignment formalia in the semester guide, which is available at the start of the semester. The assignments can be prepared individually or in groups.
The portfolio of products consists of a customized, individual, product package from the courses 'Digital Transformation and Management' and 'Design of Complex IT-systems, Domains, Processes and Decisions'.
An individual oral exam:
The starting point of the oral part of the exam is the portfolio of products, which will be asse
ssed by the examiner before the exam.
The exam is an external examination with both internal and external examiner.Type of examCombined written and oral examinationThe starting point for the oral part of the examination is the portfolio of assignments.
The oral exam lasts 30 min. incl. grading.
An overall grade is given according to the 7-point grading scale.Individual exam or group examIndividualExam languagesEnglishDuration1. Individual presentation based on report: 5 minutes.
2. Individual examination: 20 minutes.
3. Discussion of performance and announcement of grade: 5 minutes.Type of evaluation7-point grading scaleExaminersExternal censureExam criteriaThe student will receive an individual grade for the overall performance covering the portfolio, presentation and individual examination. The evaluation of the performance is based on the degree to which it complies with the purpose and learning objectives of the subjects, as described in the curriculum.
In the subject Design of Complex IT-systems, Domains, Processes and Decisions you will receive 178 hours of instruction, which corresponds to 237 lessons (1 lesson = 45 min.) and 32% of your total workload for the subject.
The teaching primarily consists of the following activities: classroom teaching, cases, exercises.
The preparation primarily consists of the following activities: reading the curriculum, group work, exercises.
